Erik Sommer

Duluth, Minnesota, 1978

About

Sommer starts by layering raw canvas on top of raw canvas and heavily soaking the outer canvas until the paint seeps through to the canvas behind. Relying on controlled chance, he manipulates these effects to create aleatory marks and images that appear bold and vibrant yet blanched and aged. His works, often described as meditations on erosion and permanence, capture the fragile balance between destruction and preservation, revealing the poetry hidden in crumbling surfaces.
